The mission of the Department of Africology and African American Studies (AAAS) is to provide robust and critical programs of study, research and service on the African world experience--including a particular focus on the life and culture of people of African descent in the Americas. The department pursues its mission by cultivating successive cadres of students imbued with community consciousness and equipped with intellectual tools for shaping the world of the present and the future, community engagement and diverse careers.

AAAS engages in its study of the African descent population in the United States, the African diaspora, and the African continent itself, using a broad array of interdisciplinary tools. It has touchstones in all branches of human endeavor. The multi-racial and multi-ethnic reality that is the United States and the world today has been shaped by multiple forces of human history, including science, technology, culture, entrepreneurship, the natural world, politics, literature, art, law, and education. Together with the overarching themes of the human experience--ideas, power, structure, and sustainability—these forces predominate as items of study within the multi-subject curriculum of AAAS.

All students graduating from EMU will enter a world in which these same forces and concerns will be matters of politics, public policy, societal structure, health and well-being. Technology and STEM will be a part of the broad canvas upon which their lives will unfold. Interweaving themselves throughout every society in the world will be the variables of race, ethnicity, class, religion, and gender--issues at the heart of the inquiry in AAAS. Ultimately, a graduate of the Master of Arts program in Africology and African American Studies is equipped with knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary for effective functioning in a multicultural, multiracial, and technologically advanced society.

As a concrete expression of its mission, the department currently offers a Master of Arts in Africology and African American Studies, a Bachelor's degree program in Africology and African American Studies, a minor in Africology and African American Studies, a graduate certificate in Africology and African American Studies and an undergraduate certificate in African Studies.

The School of Art & Design at Eastern Michigan University provides students and faculty in art history, studio art and visual art education with an environment that fosters excellence in teaching, creative work and research, and a department-wide focus on student-centered learning.

Students are provided with a range of academic and professional experiences in and beyond the classroom. These activities:

Provide a solid foundation in the skilled use of materials, tools and techniques associated with a wide range of artistic and classroom practices.
Promote interest in and knowledge of key issues and processes relating to contemporary and historical art, artists and educators.
Engender comprehension of visual language as a means of communication.
Foster an understanding of the larger role that the visual arts and design play in society.
Enable students to explore issues of diversity, especially in terms of the art world and its cultural influences and audiences.

The Department of Biology recognizes the concomitant importance of breadth of knowledge, specialization, and the scientific skills and attitudes associated with finding and using new knowledge.

To this end, the department:

Provides students a well-balanced academic program at the baccalaureate and master's degree levels,
Functions as a scholarly unit promoting faculty and student research, and
Serves as a resource for biological expertise, to the university and larger community.
More specifically, the goals of the department are:

To provide the highest quality educational experience possible to undergraduate and graduate students within Biology majors and minors, and to students enrolled in service courses used in other programs,
To create a learning environment that integrates research concepts with inquiry-driven pedagogy,
To strengthen the involvement in research by our faculty (as measured by increased productivity of publications, funding success, presentations, and graduate student research), and

The mission of the Center of Race & Ethnicity is to cultivate and model a safe, inclusive, socially just environment for all members of the Eastern Michigan community. Welcome to the School of Communication. We offer three primary areas of study:

Theatre Arts (Applied Drama and Theatre for the Young, Arts and Entertainment Management and Administration, Entertainment Design and Technology, Interpretation and Performance Studies, and Theatre Arts)

Services are provided by clinical psychology graduate students under the supervision of licensed faculty. The Computer Information Systems Department offers programs designed to prepare you in concepts, theory and practices for designing, constructing and maintaining information systems supporting business processes. We offer a Master of Science in Information Systems program which has been approved with a CIP code 11.0401 Information Science/Studies and is a designated STEM program (science, technology, engineering, and math). Eligible international students may apply to work in the United States for additional time via the Optional Practical Training (OPT) benefit and OPT STEM extension. The department also offers graduate certificates in Computer Information Systems and Information Technology Governance and an undergraduate degree in Computer Information Systems.

Critical Disability Studies explores diverse disabilities, from a range of interdisciplinary perspectives, to understand how society values some bodies and minds and devalues others. The minor emphasizes the social contexts, constructions and experiences of disability. It highlights forms of resistance and resilience in response to educational, medical and legal paradigms of disability. Courses examine both personal and collective responses to difference, including the interaction of disability with other forms of oppression such as age, race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, national origin, veteran status, and class. Learn about the diverse ways in which individuals labeled "disabled" have succeeded in resisting stigma to create vibrant communities and multi-faceted ways of being.

Whatever brought you to consider this program, we’re glad you’re here. A minor in critical disability studies provides the opportunity to explore the ways society shapes our perceptions and experiences of ability and disability and the value of different ways of being in the world.

If you study in our critical disability studies program, you'll learn about, conduct research in and explore:

The social, political, cultural and economic factors defining disability.
The complicated relationships disabled people have with medical, educational, and legal institutions.
Disability cultures in their various and vibrant forms, from activism to the visual and performing arts.
The ways disabled people live, learn, love, create and organize.
The interaction of disability with gender, sexuality, race and class.

Our Faculty

Well-trained faculty - all faculty hold an earned Ph.D. in Economics
from a wide variety of highly recognized universities throughout the U.S.

The publication record of the faculty is far above the rest of the university. We currently rank 13th out of a list of all Master's Degrees in Economics programs in the U.S. In addition, many serve as referees for journals in the economics discipline.

Some of the most effective classroom instructors at EMU are Economics professors. They have received the EMU Alumni Teaching Excellence Award, Golden Key Award, Student Appreciation Award of the Economics Club at EMU, etc.
A number of our faculty have been awarded sabbaticals and tabling fellowships for their research.
The Economics Department has a high productivity rate based on credit hours per faculty.

It shall be the purpose of the Eastern Michigan Club Baseball team to provide students with an opportunity to play real college baseball while attending EMU. Eastern Michigan Club Baseball wants to give every interested, committed, hard working student the chance to play competitive intercollegiate baseball. We will be participating in what is called the National Club Baseball Association and will playing teams such as Western Michigan, Grand Valley State, Ferris State, Bowling Green and many others in our conference and also nationwide. There is national team rankings, player stats, and spring training. There is a postseason playoff in Wisconsin, and a World Series which is held in Illinois. Eastern Michigan University's Interdisciplinary Jewish Studies program offers courses concerned with the history of the Jewish people, a story of survival under extraordinary circumstances. It considers the cultural and intellectual gifts Jews have given the world. It also focuses on the Jewish faith, its richness, its intricacy, its demands, as well as its complex and fascinating relationships with other religions.

This program draws on faculty expertise from throughout university. It engages students in a wide realm of co-curricular activities including lectures and study abroad opportunities. EMU's program in Jewish Studies provides a gathering place for EMU's numerous ethnic communities to learn more about Jews and Judaism, a space to build bridges, to open and engage in discourse, to create new understandings between Jews and the many other groups that comprise the diverse culture of southeast Michigan.

The Department of Leadership and Counseling provides top-quality educational experiences for a student population composed primarily of adult learners who are employed on a full-time basis in their respective fields.

Programs Overview
Both the educational leadership program (which prepares leaders for K-12 schools and institutions of higher education) and the counseling program (which prepares school, community, and college counselors) seek to distinguish themselves in the state of Michigan through graduate degrees that lead to voluntary administrative certification, counselor licensure, and school counselor endorsement.

Accreditation
The college, clinical mental health, and school counseling programs offered by the Department of Leadership & Counseling are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The Library Research Center, a service facility which offers one-to-one writing, research, and technology assistance, is a collaboration between the University Library, Division of Information Technology, the University Writing Center, and the Writing Across the Curriculum and First Year Writing Programs.

The LRC offers point-of-need help with research, writing, and technology to students working on research papers and other academic projects. University Writing Center consultants, Halle Librarians, and technology assistants work together in the Center to provide project-oriented support. Although students are a primary audience, the facility and its services are open to the entire EMU community.

The Management Department offers undergraduate majors and minors in management, general business and entrepreneurship. Undergraduates can also concentrate in human resources. The department offers graduate certificates in human resource management (HR), organizational development (OD), entrepreneurship (ENTR), management (MGMT) and a Master's in Human Resources and Organizational Development.

Department faculty members remain current in their field and continuously receive top student ratings. More than 95% of the faculty members have doctoral degrees and many have published notable textbooks and journal articles. MATH TUTORING CENTER SERVICES:

Student Usage Tracking: All students using the Math Lab are required to log in at the front desk upon arriving and to log out at the front desk prior to leaving.

Drop-In Tutoring: Free drop-in tutoring for EMU students is available during all hours that the Math Lab is open. You can stop in for help with:

* specific math homework problems or math concepts
* studying for the math placement exams
* studying for standardized tests such as the GRE or GMAT

Computer Access: The Math Lab provides access to computers for use by students for academic purposes, such as working on online homework.

Textbooks and Calculators: Calculators as well as textbooks for most EMU math courses are available for use in the Math Lab. These materials may not be removed from the Math Lab for any reason. You must leave a form of collateral, either keys or a phone, at the front desk while you are using one of our resources.

The mission of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is to instill an appreciation of the intrinsic beauty, the diverse origins, and the practical aspects of mathematics.

To this end, the department:

provides students a well-balanced academic program at the baccalaureate and master's degree levels;

serves as a resource for mathematical expertise to the university and to the larger community.

Army ROTC at Eastern Michigan University was introduced to the campus in 1952. At that time, EMU was known as the Michigan State Normal School and had 213 freshmen enrolled in ROTC classes. From its inception, the ROTC program at EMU has been a strong, respected, well-supported campus institution. Prior to the 1968-69 school year, ROTC was mandatory for all first-semester freshman males for their first two years of college. Classes were taught in Welch Hall. Extracurricular activities included: Scabbard and Blade, and AUSA Company, a Counter-Insurgency Unit, Drill Team, and a Drum and Bugle Corps.

Major changes came in 1968 when ROTC became fully elective. The program moved to Roosevelt Hall (its current location) in July 1973. The university allowed the residing cadre liberty to design the new facilities themselves. They included a multi-level firing range, supply room and plenty of day room space for the cadets. The period of greatest enrollment was in 1966 with 1,856 cadets in the program. In 1974, enrollment dropped to 74 cadets. Today, there are approximately 100 cadets in the ROTC program.

It is my distinct honor to welcome you to the online home of the School of Music & Dance at Eastern Michigan University.

With roots dating back to 1854, the School of Music & Dance strives to promote lifelong learning, to prepare students for professional careers in music or dance, and to advance the cultural life of the campus, community and beyond. Known nationally for its programs in Music Education and Music Therapy, the School also offers the Bachelor of Music in Performance, the Bachelor of Arts in Music, and a Music Minor. Dance students can pursue the Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance, or a Dance Minor. The School also offers the Master of Music degree with concentrations in performance, education, composition, conducting, and piano pedagogy.

The School of Music & Dance is home to over 60 faculty and lecturers who lead our students — nearly 300 majors and numerous students majoring in other fields — in over 200 music and dance events each year. The School is housed in Alexander Music Building, with over 86,000 square feet of space dedicated to music and an inventory of 120 pianos. Performances take place in Alexander Recital Hall, Quirk Theatre, Warner Dance Studios, the Honors College Auditorium, and Pease Auditorium, a 1500-seat historic concert hall that serves as a jewel of the EMU campus. Our Music Therapy majors conduct faculty supervised individual music therapy sessions in the EMU Music Therapy Center, a resource for both our students and the entire community. Our athletic bands proudly support the EMU Eagles, who compete in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) of NCAA Division I. Eastern Michigan University has been an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music for over 50 years.

Founded in 1849 as a small teacher's college, Eastern Michigan University is now a major learning and research institution (Carnegie R-2) for over 17,00 students, offering more than 200 undergraduate majors, minors and certificates, plus more than 150 graduate programs. EMU is situated in Ypsilanti, a culturally diverse college town with a hip arts scene and location convenient to all that Southeastern Michigan has to offer, including Ann Arbor and Detroit.

We consider you, the family, an integral part of the collegiate experience. That's why we invite you to attend New Student Orientation with your student.

SOAR
Part A of orientation, Fast Track, is a one-day program where you and your student can get the "business" of becoming an EMU student done, including registering for classes, taking an ID card photo and getting answers to questions about paying for college.

EMU welcomes families and guests (two guests/family members maximum per student); however, there are no child care services available during this program.

First Three
Part B of orientation, Connect, is a three-day, intensive program introducing students to EMU resources. We invite you to attend the first day of Connect, a Friday. Each student may bring up to four guests/family members; however, please note that there are no child care services available during this program.

Psychology, as a discipline, is concerned with the experience, behavior, needs, desires and potential of human beings. It is basic to self-development, and to career fields and life pursuits that involve other human beings.

Objectives of the department are to provide a general and in-depth survey of the fields of the science of psychology for students interested in diversified career fields; to prepare undergraduate students to pursue graduate studies in order to enter one of the several professional career areas for which the major is required: clinical psychology, industrial psychology, school psychology, teaching and research in psychology, for example; and to help students who are interested in self-development obtain current and sound approaches to problems of topical interest.

Graduate study leads to a master’s degree in psychology with programs in general psychology, clinical psychology, clinical behavioral psychology and to the Ph.D. in clinical psychology. These programs are described in the graduate catalog.

SEEUS (Student Eyes and Ears for University Safety) is designed to enhance your safety and peace of mind while you walk on campus after dark. SEEUS provides escorts to persons walking alone to on-campus destinations such as classrooms, buildings, residence halls and parked cars. SEEUS also provides additional eyes and ears for the EMU Police Department by observing the campus environment.

Escorts provided by SEEUS are primarily walking escorts, although some mobile escorts are available from Green Lots 1 and 2 to residence halls and on-campus apartments. Mobile escorts are not intended as an optional form of transportation and DPS may deny the request when two or more individuals are going to the same destination. Escorts will be provided for on-campus origins and destinations only.

The Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology, or "SAC" as it is mostly called, takes pride in being an integral part of Eastern Michigan University's undergraduate experience and providing excellent programs at the graduate level. The Department of Special Education, and Communication Sciences and Disorders is one of the largest and most comprehensive special education, and communication sciences and disorders units in the country. Graduates from the department at Eastern Michigan University have been recognized for their work in the field locally and nationally. They have distinguished themselves as program directors, school superintendents and college instructors. Several of the department's graduates have been named Teacher of the Year in their respective communities.

The Department of Special Education, and Communication Sciences and Disorders has one of only two Physical and otherwise Health Impaired (POHI) teacher preparation programs in the state; and is one of very few such programs in the nation. The department's faculty and staff are involved in related professional and community endeavors at local, state and national levels.

Mission
The Women's and Gender Studies Department has a proud history and a prominent place on the Eastern Michigan University campus. Initiated in 1975, the department has grown from its roots offering the first minor in Women's Studies in the State of Michigan, to a well-respected and vibrant department boasting an undergraduate major and minor, and the state's only stand- alone Master of Arts in Women's and Gender Studies. In 2003, the Women's Studies Program added "Gender" to its name, and launched a minor in Queer Studies in 2013.

We attract students - regionally, nationally, and internationally - who choose to study here because of our excellent faculty, small class sizes, and the opportunity for research and community involvement through course work and faculty mentoring, graduate assistantships, and student organizations. Curricula are flexible, so students can tailor their programs of study to individual career goals.

Although the Women's and Gender Studies department is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, it is a model of interdisciplinary collaboration on the EMU campus, with over 25 Department Members from each of the five colleges - Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Health and Human Services, and Technology - and the University Library.

Our student body is diverse in terms of age, gender and gender identity, race and ethnicity, country of origin, and socioeconomic status. We welcome you to explore these pages, and to apply to our programs.

About Us
The Department of World Languages prepares students for professional roles in education and business in a multicultural world by fostering facility in one or more languages. We aim to help students develop the critical thinking skills necessary to deepen and sustain cross-cultural understanding and perspectives.

We teach languages both for their inherent humanistic value and for their practical application in today's international world of work and careers. Among the specific goals of the department are:

To comply with the national standards (cultures, communication, connections, comparisons and communities)
Provide experiences (e.g. practice teaching, immersion programs and internship) enhancing student awareness and understanding of other cultures and the multicultural reality of the U.S.
Promote critical thinking on a variety of topics.
Equip students to communicate and pass on their acquired knowledge to others.
Enable students to work more effectively in today's global working environment.
Teaching Programs
Our teacher preparation programs prepare skilled second and foreign language teachers for a variety of national and international education settings. Graduates of these programs possess appropriate language competency, cross-cultural awareness and pedagogical skills and resources to provide effective instruction meeting U.S. national standards.

Business Language Programs
Our business language programs provide students from diverse backgrounds with knowledge and skills in modern foreign languages, cultures and international business. We enhance the lives of students and the community by teaching students to function effectively in international business contexts.

Language Programs
Our purpose for language instruction is to promote the language acquisition necessary for the understanding of and successful participation in multicultural societies. Through learner-centered approaches, we strive to foster of the nature of language and culture.
